Best Home Automation Tip: Keep it Simple – Part 2

Welcome to part 2 of our summer series, where we share tips on what you should NOT automate. Home automation is undoubtedly a smart and sustainable choice, most of the time. However, there are instances where going too far with automation can lead to inconveniences or even dangerous situations. In this blog, we’ll delve into the topic of smart access control and highlight the potential risks associated with AI and voice activation.

Backup System Smart Access Control

Smart access control offers many benefits, whether at home or for your business, such as:

  • Conveniently opening the gate or garage automatically upon arrival.
  • Viewing and remotely opening the gate or front door through your phone.
  • Providing and blocking (temporary) access codes as an administrator for an apartment complex or business center.

But watch out! If you also have an alarm system and a smart – electric – door lock, you should really give some thought on a reliable backup system for your access control. A backup battery can only last a few hours to a day tops, depending on the system and product. If you face an extended power outage, you won’t be able to access your own home or business. Something you want to avoid at all costs, of course!

Risks of Voice Activation Due to the Rise of AI

Be cautious about using access control via voice commands. In the past, opening the front door with a voice command seemed like a fun and convenient gadget. At Comfortica, we also appreciated its handiness, especially when carrying groceries and being able to open the door with just our voice. However, the rise of AI has changed the landscape.

Today, there are fraudulent phone calls circulating, where supposed telecom companies hang up after 10 seconds, but they gather enough information from your responses to mimic your voice using AI. This makes access control via voice command very risky. The uniqueness of voice control is simply not sufficient now to use it safely for access control. This makes access control via voice command an unnecessary risk. Our advice – for now – is not to do it.

Keep it Simple!

This was part two of our summer blog with “DON’T DO” tips. In part 1, we discussed:

  • The most forgotten but necessary Wi-Fi point in the house.
  • The usefulness and necessity of light switches.
  • Why you shouldn’t automate the pool cover and sauna.
